What if growing older isn’t about becoming less of who we were, but becoming more of who we are?
In this episode of Things That Matter, I sit down with Wendi Knox, whose relationship with dragonflies began during a major turning point in her life.
At 50, Wendi lost her job as an advertising creative director and wondered if she was too old to reinvent herself. Then something extraordinary happened: hundreds of red dragonflies appeared in her backyard.
When Wendi learned more about the dragonfly’s life cycle, she discovered a metaphor that changed her perspective. Dragonflies spend much of their lives in the muck, repeatedly shedding their old skin before eventually emerging and taking flight.
Wendi realized she was doing the same thing.
Since then, dragonflies have become part of her personal museum. Friends and strangers have gifted her dragonfly pins, artwork, pottery, clothing, and other meaningful objects. Each one has become another reminder of transformation and possibility.
But Wendi’s real legacy isn’t the collection.
Through her book, The Way of the Dragonfly, and her work with women in midlife and beyond, she wants the dragonfly to represent a new way of thinking about aging, one where we shed the beliefs that no longer serve us, show our true colors, and continue growing new wings.
As Wendi beautifully reminds us, it’s never too late to soar.
